Montreat, Bluefield Advance in Women's Volleyball Tournament

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - It was an action-packed opening day as No. 7 seed Bluefield and No. 9 seed Montreat advanced to the quarterfinal round of the 2023 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Volleyball Tournament on Thursday.

The tournament is being held at the MeadowView Marriott Convention Center & Conference Resort in Kingsport, Tenn.

Bluefield went the distance against No. 10 seed Union, winning in five sets. Meanwhile, Montreat recorded its first tournament win since 2012 with a sweep of No. 8 Pikeville.

Bluefield and Union traded sets all match, but Union led 8-7 at the turn in the fifth set. However, Bluefield scored the match's final eight points to win the frame 15-8 and the match 3-2. Joslyn Evans led Bluefield with 18 kills with Liangelys Santana adding 17. Nayerly Jimenez registered 56 assists and nine digs.

For Union, Raquel Kessler delivered 18 kills, while Sarah Charkosky and Maddy McGaughey each had 20 assists. McGaughey also had 16 digs to give her a double-double.

Montreat was in control for the majority of the match as it swept Pikeville, winning 25-20, 25-12, 25-21.

Kamryn Wolf logged 17 kills to lead Montreat, while Katie Dickey chipped in 10.

For Pikeville, Lanie Hawley set the tone with 10 kills with Cheyenne Martinez registering 16 assists and 10 digs.

The quarterfinal round gets underway Friday at 11 a.m.
