WALESKA, Ga. - The 2024 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Soccer Tournament got underway Wednesday with a pair of nail-biters. No. 8 Pikeville and No. 9 Union Commonwealth played to a 0-0, double-overtime draw, while a late goal sent No. 7 Columbia past No. 10 Brenau in a 1-0 affair.
After 110 minutes, Pikeville and Union Commonwealth failed to break into the score column and needed a penalty shootout to decide who would advance. Both teams had chances to win during the first five rounds, but it was tied 3-3 heading into the sixth round. Union Commonwealth missed its sixth kick, but Jayla Boyd connected on her kick to make it 4-3 and send Pikeville on to the quarterfinal round.
Millie Conod recorded six saves for Pikeville, while Chiara Isanto posted four stops for Union Commonwealth.
Columbia and Brenau appeared to be on their way to overtime as it was 0-0 late into the match. However, Jordan Myers broke the deadlock with her ninth goal of the season in the 86th minute.
Teagan Eisenring registered four saves in picking up the shutout win.
Both teams move on to the quarterfinal round where Pikeville will face No. 1 Truett McConnell and Columbia will visit No. 2 Tennessee Wesleyan.
