ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A pair of first-half goals powered No. 2 seed Reinhardt's way to the 2020-21 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Women's Soccer Tournament championship as it took the title with a 3-1 win over host and No. 1 seed Truett McConnell on Wednesday.
With the tournament title, Reinhardt secured its spot in the NAIA National Championship Tournament. Truett McConnell also advances as the regular-season champion. The national tournament gets underway on April 15 with the opening round.
The Lady Eagles opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a goal coming off a cornerkick. Lidia Herrera gave Reinhardt a 2-0 halftime lead as she deposited a goal four seconds before the break.
Sydney League tried to get the Lady Bears back on the hunt, scoring in the 71st minute to make it a 2-1 contest. However, Brianna Smotherman put a stop to that as she scored in the 75th minute to give Reinhardt a 3-1 advantage.
Reinhardt's Caroline Johnson earned Tournament MVP honors as she recorded seven saves in the win.
Joining her on the All-Tournament Team are Elisabeth Dunlap, Adriana Garcia, and Jasmine Usher of Reinhardt; Lyndsey Darden, Ashleigh Smitherman, and League of Truett McConnell; Jackie Montes and Micah King of Montreat; and Chloe Rootes and Natalie Feaster of Tennessee Wesleyan.
This is Reinhardt's first tournament title since 2016.
