MONTREAT, N.C.— Kayla Bone has officially been named the interim head coach for the Montreat women's lacrosse program according to an announcement from the athletic department late last month.
Bone spent the 2023 season with the responsibilities of a head coach by filling a hiring vacancy on the staff. After initially being brought on as a volunteer assistant coach, the Carrollton, Ga. native led the Cavaliers to a 7-6 (4-3 Appalachian Athletic Conference) record and an appearance in the first round of the AAC Tournament.
"I'm thrilled to announce Coach Bone as the interim head coach for our women's lacrosse program," said Director of Athletics Garrett Jones. He added, "She did a tremendous job stepping in to assist our program last spring and her continued passion and work ethic to see this program thrive is evident on a daily basis. Coach Bone's humility and passion for the game of women's lacrosse is phenomenal but I'm most excited about her desire to serve our women's lacrosse players as the develop spiritually, academically and athletically."
Familiar with the conference, Bone spent her playing career at fellow AAC member institution, Point University, as a goalie for the 2021 and 2022 campaigns. With the Skyhawks, Bone amassed 304 saves, the fifth-most in a career in NAIA history. A 222-save year highlighted her career as Bone led the nation in saves and saves per game (13.06) in 2022. She also tied for the third-most saves in a single game in NAIA history with her 22-save performance against Truett McConnell on March 5, 2022, while recording a pair of 20-save efforts in her two years on the team.
"I'm so excited to be a part of the Montreat College community. I look forward to serving the women's lacrosse team and building on the foundation that has been established. This program has taken huge strides to be where it is now and I look forward to building on that success," noted Bone on her hiring.
Bone earned her bachelor's degree of business administration in accounting from Point in 2021 before going on to receive her Master of Business Administration in 2023. Following her undergraduate graduation, Bone became a graduate assistant with Point's women's lacrosse program for the fall of 2022. She now lives in Black Mountain, N.C. with her sister, Aleea.
