BLUEFIELD, Va. - Jake Wright- Director of Athletics Corey Mullins announces new women's head basketball coach.
Head Coach Jake Wright
"As a coach, I am truly blessed to get to lead this program and these amazing young ladies and get this program going in the right direction! I've dreamed of being a Head coach at the college ranks my whole life and when I was blessed enough to get on Bluefield's campus, I knew I had found my home. I fell in love with the amazing people, facilities, and the team itself! It's truly an honor and privilege to be the next head women's basketball coach at Bluefield University! It's a Great Day to be a BU Ram."
Corey Mullins Director of Athletics
"From the very beginning of this search, it was clear that there was a lot of energy in interest in Bluefield Women's Basketball. We were looking for someone who could galvanize the current roster and bring together the talent that exists already in the program. Last year was underwhelming for everyone involved with the program. It was clear from my conversations with the players on campus, that they needed a leader who was relatable, could create a 'team first' culture, and who could continue to develop individuals to perform at their best. Additionally, I did want someone who had a vision for the future of this program; someone who could recruit young women who valued the community that Bluefield provides and hold our team accountable to a higher standard.
"I must have talked to about 15 or so coaches and fielded numerous reference calls. This candidate pool was deep. Jake Wright stood out among the rest from the very beginning. He impressed everyone on campus with his high energy and sincerity when communicating his vision for Bluefield Women's Basketball. His experience in the conference, as a juco assistant, and as the head coach of a progressive high school program helped define his abilities in the eyes of the committee. He won over our players early in the process with his vision and coaching style."
"I am excited to welcome Jake, his wife Tuesday, and their son Jasper to Bluefield. I know that the program is in good hands with the Wright family. I am looking forward to watching this team develop under his direction. "
Wright's Background and Experience
Jake Wright brings a profound commitment to excellence coupled with a distinguished track record of success spanning two decades of playing and coaching experience. His tenure includes significant achievements as Head Girls Basketball Coach and Head Softball Coach at Scott High School, Huntsville, TN, where he notably competed for two district championships and achieved the highest number of regular season wins in two decades. Moreover, his coaching expertise facilitated the recruitment of two athletes to Johnson University, underscoring his impact beyond mere win-loss records.
Before his role at Scott High School, Coach Wright was Assistant Women's Basketball Coach at Cleveland State Community College from 2018 to 2020. During this period, he excelled in athlete recruitment and fostering team morale, nurturing several standout players who accumulated TJCAA accolades and advanced to Division I competition.
A former collegiate basketball player, Jake Wright commenced his career at Berry College in Rome, GA, from 2012 to 2014, subsequently transferring to Bryan College. While at Bryan College, Wright encountered setbacks with multiple knee and shoulder injuries that regrettably ended his basketball playing career.
