MONTREAT, N.C.— Josh Thompson, who led the Montreat women's basketball program for the past two years, resigned from his position last week.

During his first year at the helm of the program, Thompson's team saw great improvement. Not only did the Cavaliers start a season 5-0 for the first time since 2010-11, but they also won seven straight contests, the longest win streak in over a decade, en route to a 20-10 overall record. As a result, the Cavs enjoyed their first Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament semifinal appearance since 2015-16 and their winningest season since 2011-12.

"I'd like to thank President Maurer, Vice President Larios, Garrett Jones, Jason Beck, Montreat College and all my players these past two years," said Thompson. "I'm very grateful for the opportunity that Montreat gave me to lead the women's basketball program. I will miss the school and the great people who work here."

This season under Thompson, the women's basketball team bested the 2022-23 win streak by topping opponents in eight straight contests. The Cavaliers went on to make the quarterfinal round of the AAC Tournament as Thompson concluded his tenure with a 36-23 overall record and a 28-18 record in AAC action through two years.

Over the past two seasons, the Cavs tallied four all-conference selections, three First Team All-AAC players, four AAC All-Defensive Team athletes, one AAC All-Freshman Team recognition, four AAC Player of the Week awards, an AAC All-Tournament Team nod, three College Sports Communicators Academic All-District® honorees, 13 AAC All-Academic Team honors and eight Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete awards.

"We are grateful for Coach Thompson's time leading our women's basketball program," said Director of Athletics Garrett Jones. "We wish Coach Thompson, his wife Danielle, and their family the best as they transition to their next opportunity. We are extremely excited for the future of Montreat College women's basketball and will move swiftly to identify our next leader."

Thompson, who came to Montreat after a 10-year-long stint as the head coach of the women's basketball program at King University, is returning to the NCAA Division II institution in the same capacity. A national search has now started for the next head women's basketball coach at Montreat College.
