BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Renee Hicks has been named the head softball coach at Union College. Hicks is a former two-sport athlete at Union; playing both basketball and softball. She is a member of the Union College Athletics Hall of Fame.
Hicks' extensive coaching career includes a near 20-year tenure at Bellarmine. She led the Knights to the Midwest Regional in 2012 and 2014. During Hicks' tenure at Bellarmine, there were 41 times when a player was named first, second, or third team all-conference.
It's not the first time that Hicks has been at the helm of the Union softball program as she was the head coach from 1995-1999. In addition to her role as head softball coach, she is the Associate Athletic Director, a Senior Women's Leader, and Title IX Compliance for Student-Athletes.
"As we began the process of looking for a new Head Softball Coach, it was very evident from the beginning that this was the direction we were going to go," Executive Director of Athletics Tim Curry said. "I am very excited about Coach Hicks taking over our program and look forward to watching her teams compete."
Hicks is excited about entering her second tenure as the head softball coach at her alma mater.
"I'm excited to once again be the head coach at Union," Hicks said. "The team has been very welcoming. They've worked hard so far. They're excited to get to work."
Hicks is pleased with the talent that she is inheriting, and is looking forward to coaching this group.
"The talent is there," Hicks said. "I told the staff, our players are going to win; not us coaches. We're going to push them. We're going to help them get there."
Union's coaching staff now consists of head coach Renee Hicks, assistant coach Tiffanie Moore, and graduate assistant Selina Tavarez. All three coaches played softball at Union.
