WALESKA, Ga. - Reinhardt University Athletic Director, Jeffrey Pourchier, announced on Wednesday this week that he has hired Becca Hewitt to take over the Eagles Softball program.
Hewitt will take over the head coaching spot after a one-year stint by Coach David Dews where the team finished as Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) 2023 regular season champions. The team had a great run in the AAC Tournament where they worked their way to the championship game where they narrowly lost to Tennessee Wesleyan and earned a spot into the NAIA National Tournament.
Hewitt is a native of Claxton, GA where she attended Pinewood Christian Academy in 2009 and was a standout softball player. Primarily a pitcher but played every position, she was a five-year starter earning All-Region and All-State all five years.
She played four years of collegiate softball at South Georgia State, East Georgia State, Coastal Georgia, and the University of South Carolina Beaufort. She graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Sport Management from Georgia Southern University where she also attained her Master's Degree in Coaching.
Hewitt's coaching career started while she was in high school at Evans County Recreation Department where she was a volunteer coach for Pinewood Academy Junior Varsity Softball. After graduating college, Hewitt began working for Superior Fastpitch Academy where she was an instructor for pitching and hitting and coaching 12u and 14u for two years. She became an assistant at East Georgia State College for one year in the 2015-16 season and was promoted to the head coaching spot where she served from 2016-2019. During her time at East Georgia State, Hewitt had a record of 78-46.
Hewitt took over at Middle Georgia State University in 2019 where she led the program to breaking multiple records with its first Top 25 ranking in the NAIA. During her time at Middle Georgia, Hewitt had a record of 106-60. In her final season at Middle Georgia, her team had their best season in school history with a record of 43-14 and they won the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament, which gave them an automatic birth to the NAIA Nationals.
Hewitt will take over the Eagles' Softball Program with a full plate of talent, which has a combination of both experienced veterans and talented underclassmen. The Eagles were led by Whitney Shepherd and Ally Andriano in the circle last season and field players like Emily Loveless, Kilie Frieje, and Molly Stevens. Stevens and Frieje were both freshman standouts that gave a spark to the Eagles program. With a good recruiting class coming in and getting 2022 season leader Jill Martinet back after sitting out the 2023 season with an injury, the Eagles should make be one of the top teams in the NAIA next season.
Hewitt will start in August getting her team ready for the 2024 softball season as the students return on August 2nd for the 2023 Fall semester.
