Maston Resigns after Long Stint at Montreat
MONTREAT, N.C.— Following 11 seasons at the helm of the Montreat softball program and a few years as an Associate Director of Athletics, Heather Maston has resigned from her position, effective immediately. Maston, who was the longest tenured coach at the institution, also served as the Champions of Character liaison and on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council.
Over her years with the Cavaliers, Maston accumulated 117 wins, including 56 victories in conference play. Maston reached the 20-win mark during the 2019 season when the Cavs tallied a 20-27 record and notched the fifth 10-win campaign of her coaching career in Montreat's most recent season.
Throughout the decade-long span, her teams saw numerous academic achievements as well as all-conference awards. Recently, Maston's squads regularly boasted GPAs over 3.0, while the Cavaliers garnered a nominee for the Leroy Walker Character Award—an award given to a junior or senior who exemplifies the values of the NAIA's Champions of Character initiative—in 2020.
Prior to her time at Montreat, Maston started her coaching career at the high school level. After graduating from University of the Cumberlands in 2003, Maston served as a graduate assistant at her alma mater.
"I'm grateful for Coach Maston's leadership here at Montreat College the past 11 years," mentioned Director of Athletics Garrett Jones. He continued, "She has served her student-athletes, the campus community and our athletic department with high character and integrity during her time and was committed to our Christ-centered mission. Coach Maston was also deeply invested in leading our NAIA Champions of Character program. We wish her nothing but the best moving forward!"
A national search for the next head softball coach will begin immediately and an interim plan will soon be announced.
