Tennessee Wesleyan, Bryan Collect Opening Round Victories

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Tennessee Wesleyan and Bryan each pulled off the upset in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round on Monday.

Playing in the Bowling Green Bracket, No. 3 seed Tennessee Wesleyan knocked off second-seeded Campbellsville (Ky.) 3-2. Meanwhile, No. 4 seed Bryan pulled out a 10-inning, 1-0 victory over No. 1 seed William Carey in the Hattiesburg Bracket.

Down 2-1 in the fifth, Tennessee Wesleyan rallied for a pair of runs to grab the 3-2 edge. Loryn Sherwood and Haley Hinshaw each collected an RBI in the fifth to put the Bulldogs ahead. Courtney Strong took care of the rest as she struck out eight in picking up the complete-game victory.

Tennessee Wesleyan now faces No. 1 seed Central Methodist in the winners' bracket finale on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET.

Bryan had its chances to score all game, leaving a total of 10 men stranded on base. But the Lions did not crack the scoring column until the top of the 10th. Bryan had two on with one out when Brianna Nagelhout reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Katie Dinger to score.

Annalise Wood took care of the rest. The freshman hurler struck out 11 while walking none and giving up only three hits in picking up the win.

Bryan will face No. 3 seed Webber International in the winners' bracket finale on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET.
