Reinhardt's Friedberg Wins Javelin; Montreat Narrowly Misses Out Making Top 5
GULF SHORES, Ala. - The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) had one athlete win an individual national championship while Montreat nearly cracked the top five at the 2022 NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Meet.
The three-day event was held at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Ala., on May 25-27.
David Friedberg of Reinhardt captured the AAC's lone individual national championship as he won the javelin with a throw of 69.90 meters, becoming Reinhardt's first-ever track & field national champion.
In the team competiton, Montreat posted a sixth-place finish as it tallied 28 total points. The Cavaliers were one point shy of cracking the top five as Madonna (Mich.) had 29 points to land fifth overall.
Reinhardt was 32nd with 10 points, while Columbia International tied for 40th with eight points. Milligan tied for 49th with six points, and Union tied for 69th with two points.
The AAC saw several individuals earn NAIA All-American honors. In addition to Friedberg, the individuals are:
- 1500 - Dylan Branch, Montreat - second, 3:51.83; Will Stockley, Milligan - fifth, 3:53.73;
- 5000 - Aaron Jones, Milligan - seventh, 14:58.64;
- Half marathon - Nathan Richards, Montreat - third, 1:09:46.87;
- Long jump - Dustin Blevins, Montreat - fourth, 7.50 meters;
- Triple jump - Blevins, Montreat - third, 15.16 meters; Myles Lincoln, Union - seventh, 15.01 meters;
- Shot put - Jaja Davis, Montreat - sixth, 16.71 meters;
- Discus - Deandre Leith, Columbia International - second, 51.01 meters.
