Stan Harrison made his impact felt in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) in a multitude of ways as he served a wide variety of roles at Tennessee Wesleyan University.
A career that has spanned over 40 years has seen Harrison serve many capacities on many different levels. His career began in 1982 when he was hired as the head women's basketball coach at Tennessee Wesleyan. While coaching the women's basketball program, Harrison served as the Dean of Students and eventually went on to assume the duties of athletic director while continuing to coach the women's basketball program.
After 24 years on the sideline, which included 15 20-win seasons, over 500 career wins, nine conference championships, and seven NAIA National Tournament appearances, Harrison stepped aside from his basketball coaching and athletic director duties to serve as the university's Vice President of Enrollment and women's golf coach. Harrison also stepped into the role of Interim President for a year. The Morristown, Tenn., turned Athens, Tenn., native claimed his 500th victory on January 17, 2006, and finished with a record of 505-244.
Women's basketball and women's golf are not the only sports Harrison has served as head coach for. He continues to serve as head coach for the women's golf program and has coached men's and women's tennis as well as baseball for Tennessee Wesleyan. In his current position as head women's golf coach, Harrison has led the team to three AAC titles (2007-08, 2008-09, and 2010-11) an NAIA Region XII Championship in 2007-08 and NAIA National Tournament appearances in those three seasons. Harrison was named NAIA Region XII Coach of the Year in 2007-08 and AAC Coach of the Year in 2008-09.
During his career, Harrison has garnered awards such as the 2003-04 NAIA Athletic Director of the Year, the 2009 Charles Morris Administrator of the Year, 2003-04 Region XII Athletics Director of the Year, and the 2003 NACDA Southeast Region AD of the Year. Along with the awards, Harrison has been a part of many committees, including the Councils of Athletic Administrations (CAA), serving as the chair from 2006-08, the National Coordinating Committee, CAA Rep to the Council of the Presidents, Chair of the National Administrative Council (NAC), and the Council of Affiliated Conferences and Independents among many others. Harrison was the first person to hold the Chair position in the NAC. He also served as the president of the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) for two years, the president of the NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches Association for one year, and was the rep for the AAC to the Conference COP for two years.
In 2019-20, Harrison was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.
Harrison has been married to his wife Debbie since 1972 and together they have two children, Chris and Jennifer, and eight grandchildren.
